With Thunderbirds approaching its 50th anniversary, the British Film Institute world-premieres this brand new documentary telling the definitive story of how its creators, GERRY AND SYLVIA ANDERSON, pioneered what was to become their trademark in filmmaking using marionettes: ‘Supermarionation.’ Using a wealth of new interviews and previously unseen archive footage, the film celebrates the studio and the shows that they made famous worldwide. The film will be followed by a Q&A session with “Filmed in Supermarionation” director STEPHEN LA RIVIERE and executive producer TIM BEDDOWS for a panel discussion on the extraordinary career of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.

UK/SCI-FI: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND THE BODY
2nd September – 11th November 2014, Tuesdays, 6.30–8.30pm
The BFI is also offering a 10-session course exploring the world of Sci-Fi starting with author and director Bev Zalcock exploring the history and ideas of the sci-fi film genre, using clips from classic and contemporary sci-fi to consider representations of invasion and social control, and human and futuristic cityscapes. The course begins with silent cinema and moves through to 50s Hollywood and on to contemporary depictions of dystopia, spanning both mainstream and arthouse cinema.
