Welcome to British UNIMA’s New Digital Home!
Celebrating Puppetry, International Exchange, and Creativity
Hello puppetry enthusiasts!
We’re excited to introduce British UNIMA’s new website, a fresh space where we can share news, events, and opportunities with our community. As a volunteer-run organisation, this platform gives us more flexibility to bring you regular updates, insights, and ways to get involved.
Who We Are
British UNIMA is part of UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), a global puppetry organisation founded in 1929 and affiliated with UNESCO. Since its establishment in 1963, British UNIMA has worked tirelessly to promote international exchange, supporting foreign companies visiting the UK and British companies touring abroad.
We continue this mission through:
🎭 Access to international festivals, workshops, and networking opportunities
📖 Publishing Puppet Notebook magazine & a newsletter three times a year
🎙️ Organising the annual John Phillips Memorial Lecture
🌍 Encouraging professional training, research, and international collaboration
Meet the team
Puppet Notebook – The BrUNIMA Journal of Puppetry Arts
Welcome to Puppet Notebook, the official magazine of British UNIMA (BrUNIMA), dedicated to exploring the art, history, and innovation of puppetry. Launched as the successor to the BrUNIMA Newsletter and Bulletin (1964–2004), Puppet Notebook is a high-quality, black-and-white publication filled with news, features, interviews, reviews, and resources for puppetry enthusiasts. Each issue delves into a unique theme, offering deep insights into the traditions, innovations, and cultural intersections of puppetry around the world.
Looking Ahead
British UNIMA has a long history of fostering international connections, from hosting major international puppet festivals in the 1960s to contributing extensively to the World Encyclopaedia of Puppetry Arts (WEPA). Our members have served on the UNIMA Executive Committee, contributed to industry-wide projects like PuppeteersUK, and continue to champion puppetry in the UK and beyond.
Our Paid subscribers (members) will be notified shortly, and we can’t wait to grow this space together. If you have puppet-related performances, workshops, or festivals to share, get in touch—we’d love to help spread the word!
Thank you for being part of British UNIMA—here’s to the future of puppetry! 🎭✨
Best wishes,
The British UNIMA Team
